Hardcore’s sonic evolution has taken its share of turns over the course of its 40 year history, but its wisest adherents understand a simple fact: The progenitors got it right the first time. In that regard, New Jersey’s Thought Control can count themselves among the enlightened.

Thought Control favors a perfection of execution over novelty. Instead of aiming to innovate, they demonstrate why a band playing fully optimized, razor sharp hardcore is still as revelation even four decades into the genre’s lifespan. When you think of hardcore—no modifier, straight-up hardcore—this is the sound that should come to mind. Like the form’s originators in the 80s, revivalists like Government Warning in the 2000s, or likeminded contemporaries such as Armor or Electric Chair, Thought Control trims the fat and delivers only the most critical components.

Formed as a solo project by John K. in mid-2020, Thought Control quickly coalesced into a proper band, featuring members of Sunstroke, The Dividing Line, and Electric Flesh. Their debut EP, Shock to the System, was written and performed entirely by John K., and was engineered/mixed by Dom Maggi at The Lumberyard. Mastering duties were handled by the ever-capable Will Killingsworth of Dead Air Studios. The result is a no-bullshit affair that’s seeing life as a physical release in the form of a cassette via New Morality Zine and Government Check Music.

The merits of masterfully executed hardcore can’t be overstated. There’s a reason this music attracts hordes of fanatical devotees with each new generation, and bands like Thought Control are it. No bullshit. No gimmicks. Just hardcore done right. And even in 2020, 40 some years on, there still ain’t nothing better.
